Chapter 5 - Landscaping Challenges

Garden railroaders often face astounding challenges when working in the great outdoors. Be inspired by these creative railway builders who have overcome numerous landscape challenges, including very small spaces, steep slopes, deep shade, hot, dry climates, and even curious young children. Their solutions have resulted in beautiful, yet practical railway gardens.
Native sandstone rocks and dryland plants dominate Pat and Joel Hayward's Redstone Railway in Colorado. Gardening in a climate that receives less than a foot of moisture annually, they've learned that only the toughest plants survive. A fine-screened rock mulch is used both for ballast and mulch, helping to conserve moisture and reduce the incidence of weeds.
